Britney Spears “3”

Check out the video for Britney Spears’s latest song “3.”

You should also check out the lyrics.

They say absolutely nothing about 3somes.

When did this culture get so obsessed over fake sex and sexual innuendo? How has pop culture “progressed” towards “sexual liberation” by talking subliminally about it?

Now, sure there are plenty of popular resources that do speak frankly and straightforwardly about sexual encounters, but the infinite pool of pop culture that we absorb on a daily basis is scarce when it comes to informational and entertaining thoughts and ideas about sexuality.

Remember the 90s, guys? George Michael and Salt-N-Pepper gave us “I Want Your Sex” and “Let’s Talk About Sex.” Even Sir Mix-a-lot broke it down about butts!

So many changes in the law, in music, and in the way society perceive sexuality has made the use of sexual innuendo all the more sensitive. Explicit lyrics are generally popular in hardcore rap music, often for shock value and status. Popular music (music that’s safe) barely pushes the envelope. But, listeners still find it provocative. When I think back to Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl,” it becomes so disappointing to find that only the superficial elements of a simple, semi-sexual act are celebrated. The same goes for “3”. Britney doesn’t address any intent for sex. Her partners are ambiguous. But, it’s highly risque and tongue-in-cheek. OMG! What is it? What is it?

Why can’t we be real about sex?
